Victory! (Sort of)

August 22nd, 2008

At last I found a fix for some oddities in font size. It still makes no sense to me, however. Why do I have to set the postmetadata links one em bigger than the postmetadata non-link text? It’s a mystery I am sworn to solve. But if anyone reading this can clue me in, I’d be every so grateful.

A new WordPress theme is in the works

August 11th, 2008

For the redesign of CNY Skeptics I’m going to create a new WordPress theme. At first I started to simply copy the page layout for this site, and then I decided I would learn a lot more by stepping outside my comfort zone and doing something different. I’ve been looking at four column themes, and I’ve sketched out a rough idea of what I want to do.

WP CSS

OMG, it’s 12 pages long! This is going to take me a while.

Figuring it out

June 28th, 2008

I’m starting to understand how WP works. It’s really not as complicated as I thought it would be. It took me a while to see how the PHP worked to call different elements. Now I can see the advantage of putting headers, footers, sidebars in separate files and calling them with PHP.

I’m at the point where I have to finish the design and the organization of the site before I can do more coding.

Another little triumph for the noob

June 21st, 2008

I successfully created a new directory called “blog” (okay, so no points for creativity), moved the WP files into it, and here I am, still standing (well, sitting, but at least upright and not passed out over the keyboard). I followed these instructions from the WP codex very carefully.

This must seem so lame to people who know what they’re doing. But I am a noob remember, so I’m giving myself some credit.

One small step for me, one totally irrelevant step for mankind, or web designing-kind

June 20th, 2008

Just now I made a tiny little change to the footer. Am I starting to understand how this all works? Maybe. I’m studying WPDesigner’s tutorial and will eventually build on Elliot Jay Stocks’s Starkers Theme. At least I hope I will develop enough competence to build it nearly from scratch.

I decided to use WordPress for this site in order to get some experience with it so that later I can use it to build sites for clients who want to be able to upload and change their own content. Yes, WordPress as CMS. Tons have been written about it. And, yes, obviously, I’m a novice designer and developer, or I would already have this baby done in, like, two seconds flat.

Instead of installing WP locally, I’ve put it here in all its generic default-theme glory, and you can follow along as I change it bit by bit, no doubt making lots of hideous mistakes along the way. Stay tuned.
