New photo project

Old bank building in Mounds, Illinois

In late August I started shooting a new photo project. This image was taken in Mounds, Illinois. Mounds is eight miles north of Cairo, Illinois, where the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers converge. The whole area is rural, culturally Southern, and poor. My mother went to high school in Cairo and worked in a coffee shop when Cairo was still a thriving river town.

The photo below was taken in Cairo in the old downtown area. Many buildings have trees growing up right through the middle of them, and some of them have caved in on themselves.

A photo I like

July 24th, 2008

Yes, I’m actually going to write about something other than the torturous process of putting this website up. I was refreshing the page for the hundredth time to check a disappearing image and saw this photo in the flickr badge. I noticed how nice the colors are, and the partial view of the installation on the left side of the photo is amusing.

This is my friend Hannah. We were making a mad dash through Massachusetts and spent about an hour walking through Mass MoCA at a furious pace. But this photo is deceptive and makes me think that we were actually relaxed and exuding our cool artiste-ness on a casual stroll through the galleries.
