The problem with self-employment
August 21st, 2008
I love having my own business, working in the warm glow of my Mac, blasting the music. Every now and then I’ll get up and take a dance break when something irresistible comes across the iPod playlist. I couldn’t do that in an office. Well, not for long.
But the problem with having my own business is managing my time sensibly. The dance breaks are useful and help keep my energy up and my body untwisted, but I’m not sure that an hour spent Photoshopping Godzilla and the Starship Enterprise into a Face Your Manga avatar (just because all the cool kids on twitter are going manga) is really worthwhile.
Being a creative person who enjoys the cleverness of these minitrends that fly across the iVerse (that would be "I" for Internet and "verse" for universe) makes it hard to resist jumping in. And maybe on some level it’s useful. It keeps the neurons firing. It makes me feel a little bit connected to other humans even when I’m over my head in nested divs. So, maybe all is good? You can see all my manga avatars here .
